Big Red stings Hornets

After a month-long break from competition, the 28th-ranked Denison women's tennis team made a strong return with a 7-2 victory at No. 40 Kalamazoo College on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red grabbed an early lead by picking up the first two decisions in doubles action. Sophomore Emily Holloway and senior Heather Abzug made quick work of Cheryl Zhang and Carrie Foura. The duo was victorious at No. 3 doubles via 8-1 score. DU's second win came at the second flight where junior Meg Chiumento and freshman Rochell Issa defeated Maria Franco and Olivia Bouchard, 8-3. Kalamazoo avoided the sweep with a 9-7 win at first doubles.

In singles action, Denison won five of the six flights to secure the decision. Chiumento earned the Big Red's third point with a straight-set (7-5, 6-0) win over Franco at No. 3 singles. After dropping a straight-set decision at the top flight, DU rattled off four-consecutive wins to close out the match. Freshman Courtney Brown got things going with a three-set win over Sabrina Dass at second singles. Brown won the first and third sets by matching 6-0 scores, while Dass took the second 7-5. Issa (6-0, 7-5), Holloway (6-1, 6-0) and freshman Carol Vitellas (6-4, 6-0) were victorious in flights four, five and six, respectively.

With the win Denison improves to 2-1 on the year, while the Hornets fall to 4-2 overall. The Big Red will return to action on March 16 when they take on Whittier in California to open up their spring break trip. The Whittier match is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. EDT.
