The 30th-ranked Denison Big Red women's tennis team won an 8-1 decision over North Coast Athletic Conference rival Kenyon on Tuesday from the Mitchell Fieldhouse in Granville, Ohio.
For the third time in the last four matches, Denison secured a victory by winning all six singles points. Junior Taylor Hawkins won her second-straight and fourth overall at No. 1 singles with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Diana Aboubakare. Freshman Courtney Brown, who was named NCAC Player of the Week earlier this week, secured her team-leading sixth-consecutive singles victory on Tuesday. Brown improved to 7-2 at the second flight thanks to a 6-2, 6-0 win over Samantha Murphy.
Junior Meg Chiumento, freshman Rochell Issa and sophomore Emily Holloway all improved to 6-1 at their respective flights with straight-set wins against the Ladies. Chiumento (6-2, 6-2) and Issa (6-1, 7-6 [7-5]) both moved to 11-4 in singles play following wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. At the fifth flight, Holloway secured her team-best 12th singles victory behind a 6-2, 6-1 win over Abigail Younger. Freshman Carol Vitellas (6-2) wrapped up the singles sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Elise Altschuler.
The Big Red opened the match with wins in two of the three doubles flights. Hawkins and Chiumento improved to 5-1 as a doubles team with an 8-3 victory over Aboubakare and Murphy at first doubles, while Brown and Issa defeated Jenna Murray and Grace Winslow, 8-5, at flight No. 2. Kenyon's lone point came at the third flight via 9-7 decision.
With the win, DU improves to 8-3 while the loss drops Kenyon to 5-5. Denison returns to action this weekend when they travel to Madison, Wis. for the annual Midwest Invitational. The Big Red will begin competition on Friday (April 3).
