Big Red gets back in the win column

The 30th-ranked Denison women's team picked up their fourth win in their last five matches following a 9-0 shutout at the College of Wooster on Monday afternoon.

The junior tandem of Taylor Hawkins and Meg Chiumento improved to 4-1 since becoming doubles partners with an 8-5 victory over Rachel Mole and Catherine Christian at the top doubles flight. Also continuing to rack up wins in doubles play were senior Heather Abzug and sophomore Emily Holloway. The duo extended their current winning streak to five with an 8-4 decision over Melanie Chin and Morgan Wagers. In their first match as a doubles team, freshman Courtney Brown and junior Sarah Torrence earned an 8-3 win over Elizabeth Brewington and Catherine Boyles.

The Big Red won in straight-sets in all six singles flights. Brown, who was named North Coast Athletic Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, extended her current singles winning streak to five with a win over Mole (6-3, 6-3) at No. 2 singles.

Holloway earned her team-leading 11th win with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Rose Chiumento, the twin sister of DU junior Meg Chiumento, at third singles. Freshman Carol Vitellas was also 6-1, 6-1 winner at sixth singles. Hawkins was victorious over Christian at No. 1 singles via 6-1, 6-2 scores. At the fourth flight, Chiumento picked up her 10th victory of the season, while freshman Maddie Boster improved to 2-2 on the year in singles play. Both Chiumento and Boster won their flights with 6-1, 6-0 scores.

The Big Red moves to 7-3 with the win, while the loss drops Wooster to 2-9. Denison is back in action tomorrow when they host Kenyon. Tuesday's match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
