Box Score The Denison volleyball team completed a perfect 8-0 record at Livingston Gymnasium this season thanks to a 3-1 (23-25, 25-11, 25-12, 25-18) victory over Oberlin on Tuesday night in Granville. With the win, the Big Red secured a share of third place in the final North Coast Athletic Conference standings.
Denison finished in a three-way tie for third place with DePauw and Hiram with a conference record of 5-3. After the ties were broken, the Big Red earned the fifth seed in the 2015 NCAC Tournament that will take place at top-seeded Wittenberg on Nov. 6-7. In the opening round of the tournament, DU will take on fourth-seeded Hiram, a team they defeated 3-2 at Livingston Gym on Oct. 10.
After dropping a back-and-forth opening set, the Big Red cruised to wins in the second and third sets to take a 2-1 match lead. Oberlin followed up a strong opening set with a disastrous second. As a team, the Yeowomen committed eight attacking errors in 31 attempts with just two successful kills. Denison took the lead in the match thanks in large part to a .458 hitting percentage in the third set. DU posted 12 kills with just one error in 24 attempts. Oberlin battled hard in the fourth set, but a late Big Red run secured the home victory.
Senior Elena Lein led the offense charge with 12 kills and a .524 attacking percentage. Lein also finished with a season-high eight block assists. Classmate Brittany Perry totaled 10 kills and two block assists, while senior Kenzie Kuhn added seven kills and six block assists. Junior Rachele Lock added nine finishers, while sophomore Hannah Glick served up three of the team's eight aces. Sophomore Kaileigh Poe, who was honored prior to the start of the match for recently eclipsing 1,000-career assists, dished out 38 helpers on the night. Defensively, sophomore libero Kristin Thewes had 21 digs, while Poe chipped in 12.
Ave Spencer and Dana Thomas each had nine kills to lead Oberlin (7-15, 2-6 NCAC), while Meredith Leung handed out 25 assists and recorded three aces. Claudia Scott also had three service aces for the Yeowomen. Libero Molly Powers paced the defense with 16 digs, while Emily Kelkar finished with 11.
The Big Red (13-10) will wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a tri-match at Muskingum University. Denison will open the day against John Carroll at 2:30 p.m. before playing their final match of the regular season against the host Muskies at 5 p.m.
