Denison dominates Gators on Senior Day

Box Score

The Big Red volleyball team improved to a perfect 7-0 at Livingston Gymnasium this season following a 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-18) victory over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny in front of a rowdy Senior Day crowd on Saturday.

Denison held the Gators under double-digit scoring in the opening set after the visiting team hit -.040 with three kills and four errors in 25 attempts. Allegheny responded with their best offensive output of the day in set number two, a .206 attacking percentage. However, DU also turned out its highest mark of the afternoon at .371 en route to the nine-point win.

The third set was much closer, but a 7-0 run with the scored tied at 13-13 gave the Big Red the cushion they needed. Senior Brittany Perry finished off the win with a kill.

Senior Elena Lein led the Denison offense with 13 kills, while classmate Kenzie Kuhn and junior Rachele Lock each had nine finishers. Sophomore Kaileigh Poe dished out 37 assists, while Leah Reinfranck served up three of the team's five aces to go along with six kills. Defensively, sophomore libero Kristin Thewes collected 21 digs, while Lein finished with one solo block and one block assist.

Morgan Bush and Taylor Samuel had six kills apiece for Allegheny, while Rachel Slotterback and Bri Ashley had nine assists each. Libero Terra Schall finished with 20 digs, while Bush, Leah Franzluebbers and Bree Blair all had two blocks.

The Big Red improves to 11-9 overall and 3-2 in the NCAC, while the Gators fall to 14-8 and 1-4 in league play. Denison returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Wooster to take on the Fighting Scots. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.

NOTABLE: Prior to the game Denison honored its six senior members, Haley Butters, Annemarie Fischer, Sydney Garverick, Kenzie Kuhn, Elena Lein and Brittay Perry. This senior class has helped the Big Red post 57 wins and a pair of top-four finishes in the North Coast Athletic Conference, including a second-place finish in 2013.
