Box Score 2 The Big Red volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2014 campaign following a 3-2 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-8) victory over Albion on Saturday at the Sommer Center Spiketacular hosted by Bluffton University. Denison dropped Saturday's opener 3-0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-22) to the host Beavers.
In the five-set win over the Britons, DU freshman Leah Reinfranck posted 19 kill and a .368 attacking percentage. She also had one block assist and six digs. Also assisting in the offense were juniors Brittany Perry and Annemarie Fischer with 18 and 15 kills, respectively. The duo also combined for three aces, while Perry also scooped up 18 digs. Senior Jessica Borsani dished out 58 assists to go along with 20 digs over the course of five sets. The defense was led by senior libero Emily Marguerite who had 38 digs, while freshman Kristen Brennan added 10.
In the opener against Bluffton, junior Elena Lein and Perry co-led the squad with nine kills each, while Fischer also chipped in seven finishers. The setting duo of Borsani and sophomore Carly Newell combined for 28 of the team's 32 assists. Senior Allie Becker served up three aces, while Brennan also recorded two. Borsani and Newell had the other two service aces. Defensively, Marguerite had 23 digs, while Lein finished with three block assists.
At the conclusion of this weekend's tournament, Marguerite was one of six athletes named to the Sommer Center Spiketacular All-Tournament team.
With the split, Denison moves to 1-3 on the season. The Big Red opens the home portion of their schedule on Wednesday when they host Capital University at 7 p.m.
