Box Score 2 The Denison volleyball team suffered a pair of setbacks on the opening day of the 2014 Sommer Center Spiketacular hosted by Bluffton University on Friday. The Big Red dropped a 3-0 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23) decision in the opener against Geneva, and fell to Heidelberg 3-1 (25-21, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21) in the nightcap.
Against the Golden Tornadoes, juniors Brittany Perry and Elena Lein led the way with nine and seven kills, respectively. Lein also posted two solo blocks. Senior Jessica Borsani handed out 20 assists, while sophomore Carly Newell and freshman Leah Reinfranck each served up two aces. Defensively, libero Emily Marguerite posted 25 digs, while Borsani chipped in nine.
Against the Berg, junior Annemarie Fischer paced the offense with 12 kills in 35 attempts. Lein and Reinfranck added 10 and eight kills, respectively. Lein and Elsa Manning each had a solo block and two block assists. Borsani and Marguerite, and first-year Kristen Brennan each served up two aces. Borsani also had 20 assists and 16 digs, while Newell dished out 15 assists. Marguerite paced the defense with 31 digs in four sets.
Denison (0-2) wraps up play at the Sommer Center Spiketacular on Saturday. The Big Red opens play on Saturday with the host Bluffton Beavers at 10 a.m. before capping off the weekend against Albion at 12 p.m.
