No. 26 DU picks up fifth-straight victory

The 26th-ranked Big Red secured its fifth-consecutive victory following a 5-0 win over North Coast Athletic Conference foe Wittenberg on Tuesday afternoon in Granville.

The unseasonably cold weather and snow forced the teams into the Mitchell Fieldhouse. With both the men and women from Denison and Wittenberg scheduled to face off today in Granville, the two coaches agreed to play both matches to decision instead of completion. Additionally, they also made the decision to start with singles play instead of the three doubles matches.

In the race to five points, the Big Red grabbed the early lead when senior Kelsey Geppner and sophomore Taylor Hawkins each posted shutout wins at the top two flights.  Geppner's win over Olivia Underwood was her fifth-straight, while Hawkins recorded her team-leading 14th win against Chelsea Reeder.

Freshman Emily Holloway defeated Morgan McDermott (6-0, 6-1) at the third flight, while Heather Abzug was a 6-1, 6-1 winner on the fourth court. The match-clinching point came at No. 5 singles where sophomore Sarah Torrence blanked Jaimie Whaley 6-0, 6-0. The victory marked Torrence's fifth-consecutive and her fourth at fifth singles.

DU improves to 9-7 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC West, while the Tigers fall to 6-8 and 0-3 in divisional play.  The Big Red closes out the regular season on Saturday when they travel to 11th-ranked DePauw for a 10 a.m. match with the Tigers.
