Big Red opens homestand with win

The 26th-ranked Denison women's tennis team opened its three-match homestand with a dominating 9-0 victory over Wooster on Thursday afternoon.

Despite having their top doubles team out of the lineup, the Big Red cruised to a clean sweep in doubles action.  Reigning North Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week Meg Chiumento and Sarah Torrence picked up their first victory at No. 1 doubles following an 8-3 decision over Rachel Mole and Catherine Boyles.

Senior Kelsey Geppner teamed up with junior Heather Abzug to shutout Rose Chiumento, sister of Meg, and Laura Kummer at the second flight.  Eleni Coleman and Emily Holloway completed the sweep with an 8-2 win over Rachel Appleton and Rachel Dietz.

In singles action, Geppner, Holloway, Chiumento and Torrence all posted 6-1, 6-0 decisions at the first, second, third and fifth flights, respectively.  Abzug picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win at fourth singles, while Coleman was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at No. 6 singles.

With the win, DU evened its record at 7-7, while the Fighting Scots fall to 5-9.  The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they host Kalamazoo at 2 p.m.
