No. 22 Big Red wins third-straight

After a sluggish start to the spring season, the 22nd-ranked Denison women's tennis team picked up its third-consecutive victory after knocking off rival Kenyon College, 8-1, on Tuesday in Gambier, Ohio.

Denison opened the match with a pair of dominating victories in double play.  At third doubles, Eleni Coleman and Emily Holloway picked up their first win of the season after defeating Abigail Younger and Elise Altschuler 8-3.  DU built a 2-0 lead over the Ladies when the No. 1 doubles team of Kelsey Geppner and Taylor Hawkins grabbed their 10th win of the year with an 8-4 victory over Taylor Diffley and Jenna Murray.  Kenyon prevented the sweep with a 9-8 victory at the second flight.

Hawkins quickly dispatched of Murray at second singles to give the Big Red their third point of the match.  The sophomore earned her team-leading 12th win via 6-4, 6-2 scores.  At fourth singles, Holloway also posted a 6-4, 6-2 over Samantha Murphy which put DU one point away from clinching the match.  That final point came at No. 3 singles where Meg Chiumento won a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Lauren Hoffman.

Geppner (first), Lauren Schechtman (fifth) and Heather Abzug (sixth) completed the singles sweep for the Big Red. In a battle between regionally-ranked opponents, ninth-ranked Geppner won a three-set match with Diffley, who is ranked 15th in the Central Region. After Diffley won the first set 7-6, Geppner rallied to win the next to via 6-2 and 10-5 scores.  Schechtman also won a three-set decision (3-6, 7-5, 10-6), while Abzug defeated Altschuler 6-4, 7-6.

With the win, the Big Red moves to 4-6 on the year, while the loss drops Kenyon to 5-7.  Denison returns to action this weekend when they travel to Madison, Wis. for the Midwest Invitational.
