Big Red takes fifth at NCAC Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison capped off its season with a pair of 3-0 wins on Saturday to secure fifth place at the 2014 North Coast Athletic Tournament held at Pam Evans Arena on the campus of Wittenberg University. The Big Red shut out Wooster (25-23, 25-17, 25-22) in the opener and finished off their tournament run with a straight-set decision (25-20, 25-20, 25-20) over Oberlin.  With the two wins, DU closed out the year with a 15-13 record.

The Big Red led by as many as eight in the opening set against the Fighting Scots, including a 14-6 lead midway through. Despite the early deficit, Wooster battled back and used a 16-7 run to take its first lead of the set at 22-21. Still down a point, junior outside hitter Brittany Perry hammered a kill to tie the match at 23-23. After an attacking error by Ksenia Klue put DU one point away from winning the first set, junior middle blocker Elena Lein finished things off with a kill of an assist from senior Jessica Borsani.

Denison dominated the majority of the second, holding a 12-point lead at 20-12 late in the set. The Scots engineered a small run to shrink the margin to 22-17, but three-straight points gave DU a 2-0 match lead. Kills by Perry and sophomore Rachele Lock sandwiched a double block by Lein and Annemarie Fischer down the stretch in the second set. Like the first two sets, Wooster had to climb out of an early hole to get back into the set. Trailing 23-17, the Scots rattled off four-straight points to close the gap to two. After Elsa Manning and Savannah Moore traded off kills, DU needed just one point to win the match. That point came from Perry, who logged her 13th kill of the match.

Perry's team-high 13 kills came off 34 attempts, while Lock finished with 11 kills. Manning and Leah Reinfranck added nine and seven, respectively. Freshman setter Kaileigh Poe dished out 21 assists, while Borsani finished with 16. The setting duo also posted 10 digs each. Senior libero Emily Marguerite collected 22 digs to go along with two aces, while Kristin Thewes chipped in 11 digs.

The Big Red opened up a 20-11 in the opening set against the Yeowomen. Despite trailing by nine points, Oberlin fought back to shrink the margin to 23-20 behind a 9-3 run. However, OC's momentum was halted by a bad set from Ave Spencer and an attacking error by Claudia Scott that gave DU the decision. The two squads played tight early in the second set. In front 15-10, the Big Red opened things up with a 7-2 run that resulted in a 10-point lead. Oberlin answered by scoring eight of the next 10 points to get within four, but a kill by Lein off a Borsani set gave Denison a 2-0 lead in the match.

DU and the Yeowomen tossed the lead back-and-forth in the early part of the third set. With the match tied at 12-12, a serving error by Dana Thomas would give the lead back to Denison for good. That miscue was followed by a Lock kill and an Oberlin attacking error. After methodically maintain their lead, Perry and Lein finished off the match with back-to-back kills.

Perry and Lock paced the offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively, while Reinfranck finished with a .556 attacking percentage with five kills in nine attempts. In addition to her 19 kills, Marguerite also served up a career-high tying six services aces. Saturday's win over Oberlin marked the fourth time she's had six aces, the previous three times happened last season. Poe and Borsani combined for 31 of the team's 37 assists, while senior Allie Becker had 15 digs.
