Denison evens NCAC mark with sweep

The Big Red improved to 2-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-11, 26-24) victory at Oberlin College on Wednesday night.

With the win, Denison picked up its eight-straight victory over the Yeowomen and moved to 56-7 all-time against OC. Wednesday's match also marked DU's 12th three-game sweep of Oberlin since 2003.

The Yeowomen gained an early lead in the first set. Trailing 6-3, the Big Red rattled off six-straight points to take a 9-6 advantage. Denison's run featured a pair of kills by Elena Lein, one kill each from Brittany Perry and Elsa Manning, an ace by Leah Reinfranck and an errory by the home team.  Oberlin shrunk the deficit to 12-11 before a 5-2 DU run opened up a four-point lead and forced the Yeowomen to call a time out. In front 17-15, the Big Red blew the set open with a six unanswered points to take an eight-point lead. Manning eventually finished off the first set with a kill.

Denison led the second set wire-to-wire after rattling off the first three points. Ahead 13-7 following a Rachele Lock kill, freshman Kristin Thewes served up back-to-back aces as part of an 8-0 Big Red run that gave the visiting team a 19-7 lead. Oberlin tried to break up DU's momentum with timeouts, but to no avail as Denison rolled to a 14-point win. Reinfranck had four kills and a block assist in the second set, while Lein and Lock each posted three kills. Lein also recorded two solo blocks.

In the third set, the Big Red scored the first nine points of the match to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Yeowomen battled back from the early deficit to 15-13. Mistakes continued to plague Oberlin as four miscues put the home team back into a six-point hole. Once again OC overcame the deficit to tie the set at 24-24. The Big Red regrouped to rattle off back-to-back points to secure the straight-set win.

Lock finished the night with eight kills and one solo block, while Lein and Reinfranck had seven kills each. Perry and Manning also added five kills apiece. Thewes served up three of Denison's five aces, while Kristen Brennan and Reinfranck each had one ace. Senior setter Jessica Borsani logged 20 assists, while freshman Kaileigh Poe dished out 13 assists.

Defensively, senior Emily Marguerite had 21 digs, while Thewes collected 14. Poe and Brennan also chipped in seven digs each. Lein posted four solo blocks and one block assist at the net, while Fischer, Reinfranck and Manning all had one block assist.

Claudia Scott paced Oberlin with eight kills, while Meredith Leung logged 19 assists. Libero Molly Powers served up four aces to go along with a team-high 18 digs.

Denison (9-10, 2-2 NCAC) closes out its three-game road trip on Friday with a 7 p.m. match at Franciscan.
