Box Score The Denison volleyball team secured its third North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season following a 3-0 (25-21, 25-9, 25-19) shutout of Wooster on Tuesday in the Big Red's final match at Livingston Gymnasium this season.
The two NCAC rivals were locked in a tight battle in the opening set which saw DU holding on to an 8-7 lead. However, the Big Red opened up a five-point lead following a kill by senior Elsa Manning, a Wooster attacking error and back-to-back kills by junior Brittany Perry. That mini run forced the Scots to call their first timeout of the set.
Wooster was able to shrink the deficit to two on a couple of occasions, but another 4-0 run gave the home team a 20-14 lead. Freshman Leah Reinfranck and Perry each had kills during the spurt, while freshman Kristen Brennan also added a service ace. The Scots fought back to make it a one-point match, but kills by Elena Lein and Annemarie Fischer sandwiched around a Savannah Moore miscue gave DU the early match lead.
Denison completely dominated the second set, holding the visiting team to just nine points. Wooster posted seven kills and a double block by Sydney Virgin and Anna Emmick in the set. However, a strong offensive effort by the Big Red coupled with nine hitting miscues by the Scots gave DU a quick 2-0 lead in the match. Lein, Fischer and Reinfranck all had three kills in the second, while Manning and Rachele Lock added two each.
The Big Red fell into an early 2-0 hole in the third set, but a 9-2 run quickly turned the momentum into the home team's favor. Denison maintained its lead for the rest of the set, leading by as many as seven points late. Perry finished off the match with her eight kill of the night.
Fischer paced the DU attack with 10 kills on 21 attempts with just three errors. Perry added eight kills, while Lein chipped in six finishers on 13 attempts with two errors. The junior middle blocker also had two solo blocks. The tandem of Jessica Borsani and Kaileigh Poe combined for all 36 assists, with Borsani dishing out a match-high 20. Poe and Brennan each had two of the Big Red's six aces on the night.
Defensively, senior libero Emily Marguerite collected 22 digs, while classmate Allie Becker had 10 digs in two sets. Marguerite now sits 27 digs shy of the Denison career mark set by DU Hall of Famer Jaime Salay (2,155). At the net, Reinfranck finished with one solo block and two block assists with Manning.
Denison improves to 11-12 overall and 3-4 in the NCAC, while the Scots fall to 7-16 and 1-4 in conference play. The Big Red will close out its NCAC scheduled this Saturday (Oct. 25) at Kenyon College. Match time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
