Box Score The Denison volleyball team opened the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference season with a 3-0 (25-11, 25-20, 25-22) victory over Oberlin on Wednesday night at Livingston Gymnasium in Granville.
After picking up a dominating 25-11 victory in the first set, the Big Red edged out a pair of close decisions in the second and third to secure their first league win of the campaign.
The Denison attack was led by freshman Rachele Lock who posted 10 kills on 18 attempts with just one miscue. Sophomore Elena Lein and Kenzie Kuhn also logged seven kills in the three-set match. Kuhn hit .600 after making just one mistake in 10 attempts, while Lein posted five blocks, including four solo rejections.
Junior Allie Becker served up a career-high four aces, while setter Jessica Borsani added three service aces. Borsani also dished out 20 assists, while freshman Carly Newell handed out 18 helpers. Defensively, junior libero Emily Marguerite had a game-high 18 digs, while senior Sarah Blum finished with 11 digs.
Hannah Tyburski led Oberlin with seven kills, while Christine Antonsen recorded six finishers. Meredith Leung dished out 20 assists, while Krista Langhans, Ave Spencer and Antonsen all served up a pair of aces. Leung and Langhans also paced the defense with seven digs apiece.
Denison improves to 11-4 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC, while the Yewomen fall to 4-11 and 0-3 in league play. The Big Red returns to the court on Saturday when they host a tri-match with Hiram and Earlham. DU will take on the Terriers at 1 p.m. and the Quakers at 5 p.m. Hiram and Earlham will take on each other in the second match of the day at 3 p.m.
