Denison drops pair to CWRU

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

An RBI single by Case Western Reserve's Rebecca Taylor scored Rachel Komar with the go-ahead run, leading the Spartans to a 6-5 victory and a doubleheader sweep over the Denison Big Red from Mather Park in Cleveland, Ohio.

After dropping game one, 6-2, the Big Red took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning of game two.  Four of Denison's five runs would come via a Meghan Edwards grand slam in the top of the third inning that scored Emily Lipsitz, Julie Rooney, and Rosie Glaser.   DU would add another run in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by Glaser.

In the pivotal home half of the sixth, Case would score four runs off two hits and two Denison errors, tying the game at 5-5 heading into the final frame.

In the top of the seventh, Edwards would reach first after a single to the gap in left, but she would be stranded at first.  In the bottom of the inning, CWRU's Komar would stroke a one-out double down the line in left field. That would be followed by Taylor with the game-winning RBI.

Kelsey Hager pitched all 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, and two earned runs.  She drops to 6-3 with the loss while Rebecca Molnar got the win by pitching 4.2 innings of relief.  She scattered six hits and did not surrender an earned run while striking out six.

In the opener, the Spartans scored five of its six runs in the fifth inning to earn a 6-2 win.  Taylor pitched all seven innings to earn the win.  She allowed six hits and two earned runs while fanning six.  Denison's Rebecca Dyer suffered her fourth loss of the season.  She struck out seven but allowed nine hits and five earned runs over her 6.0 innings of work.

Edwards was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the sixth inning.  Jess Robertson also launched a solo home run over the wall in left-center in the fourth inning to account for both Denison runs.

The Big Red will continue its non-conference schedule on Sunday (April 7) when they travel to Marietta for a doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
