Big Red sweeps Hiram in NCAC finale

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison closed out the 2013 North Coast Athletic Conference scheduled with a doubleheader sweep of Hiram on Saturday afternoon.  The Big Red won the opener 6-2 and doubled up the Terriers, 6-3, in game two.

DU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one.  After legging out a one-out triple, junior Gretchen Staubach came around to score on a sacrifice fly to right by Meghan Edwards.  The Terriers took their first lead of the game in the fourth inning.  Angela Perella tied the game with an RBI double and came around to score the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

The Big Red tied the contest in the fifth when Staubach singled in senior Rosie Glaser from second.  DU broke the 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when junior Rachel Laughlin went yard for the fifth time this season.  In the seventh, Denison added three insurance runs to secure the win.  Julie Rooney and Edwards each doubled in a run, while Laughlin logged an RBI single.

Laughlin (2-for-4) and Edwards (1-for-3) each finished with two RBIs and a run scored, while Rooney and Staubach both drove in and scored a run.  Junior pitcher Rebecca Dyer improved to 12-7 on the year after surrendering two unearned runs on four hits with eight strikeouts.  In the second inning, Dyer logged back-to-back strikeouts to end the frame.  Those two Ks moved the junior past former Big Red standout Bri Scrofano for second on the school's career list.  Dyer finished game one with 342 career strikeouts.

In the nightcap, the Big Red jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two and a half innings.  Laughlin got Denison on the board with a lead-off home run in the second inning.  DU added two more in the third thanks to a Hiram fielding error and a double by senior Jess Robertson.  In the bottom of the third, a two-out double by Perella cleared the bases and tied the contest at 3-3.

The Big Red quickly answered in the fourth with three runs of their own.  A wild pitch by Meghan Garland that scored Emily Lipsitz broke the tie and gave Denison a 4-3 advantage.  Rooney knocked in Grace Finkbiner with a one-out single, while Edwards plated Rooney with a base hit.

Denison junior Kelsey Hager picked up her 10th win of the season after allowing three runs on three hits in four innings of work.  Dyer recorded her fourth career save after scattering three hits in three scoreless frames out of the pen.  Dyer racked up six more strikeouts in game two, pushing her career total to 348.

Laughlin drove in and scored two runs to pace the DU offense.  Rooney, Edwards, Dyer and Lipsitz all recorded two hits at the dish.

Denison improves to 22-14 overall and 10-6 in the NCAC, while the Terriers fall to 12-24 and 6-10 in league play.  The Big Red wraps up the 2013 season on Monday when they travel to Ohio Northern University.  Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
