Box Score 2 The Big Red split Monday's North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with the College of Wooster in Granville, Ohio. DU won the opener 9-1 in five innings, but suffered a 1-0 setback in game two.
Denison scored in four of the five innings in the first game of the twinbill. The Big Red offense opened the bottom of the first with four-consecutive hits, including an RBI single to center by Meghan Edwards. With the bases loaded, senior Jess Robertson drew a free pass that scored Gretchen Staubach.
In the third, DU added two more runs thanks to a pair of hits and three Wooster errors. Senior Rosie Glaser knocked in Rebecca Dyer with a base hit through the right side. Sophomore Julie Rooney followed with a single through the left side that was misplayed by left fielder Kristyn Swanson, allowing Grace Finkbiner to score from second base.
The Fighting Scots broke up Dyer's shutout bid in the fourth when Paige Goldberg scored on a double to center by Demi Hart. The Big Red continued to pour on the offense in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back doubles down the left line by Rachel Laughlin and Robertson gave Denison a 5-1 lead. Emily Lipsitz laced a single up the middle that plated Robertson, while Glaser's two-out single knocked in Lipsitz.
The Big Red ended the contest with one swing of the bat in the fifth frame. After a walk and two-straight one-out singles loaded the bases, Lipsitz delivered a two-out double down the right line that scored pinch runner Ellen McDevitt-Stredney and Laughlin.
Laughlin and Rooney both went 3-for-4 at the dish, while Robertson, Lipsitz and Glaser all logged two hits. Lipsitz drove in three runs and scored another, while Robertson also had two RBIs and a run. Laughlin scored two times. Rooney, Laughlin, Robertson and Lipsitz each logged an extra-base hit. Dyer picked up her 10th win of the season after allowing one run, scattering five hits and striking out four batters.
In the nightcap, Denison pitcher Kelsey Hager and Wooster hurler Jenn Horton both tossed gems inside the circle. Hager allowed just three hits, but issued four walks over seven innings of work. Horton answered with a two-hit, three-strikeout performance for the Fighting Scots.
The game's deciding run came in the top of the fourth inning. Hart led the frame off with a double to left center. After a sacrifice bunt moved the base runner up 60 feet, Hart came around to score on a ground out by Skye Patterson.
An Edwards single in the fourth and a Staubach double in the sixth represented DU's two hits. Hart had two hits and scored the game's only run, while Erica Villa recorded Wooster's third base hit.
Denison moves to 19-13 overall and 7-5 in NCAC play, while the Scots sit at 15-17 and 3-9 in league action. The Big Red continues conference play on Wednesday when they travel to Gambier, Ohio for a doubleheader with the Kenyon Ladies. Game one is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
