Capital and Denison split on Sunday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Denison softball made the short trip to Columbus, Ohio and returned with a doubleheader split against the Capital Crusaders.  The Big Red won game one, 3-0, and dropped game two, 3-1.

In game one, Denison sent Rebecca Dyer to the circle and she did not disappoint.  The junior pitched a complete game shutout, scattering three hits while walking only one.  She also struck out six, running her season strikeout total to 111 in just 88.0 innings pitched.

The Big Red scored all three runs in the top of the first inning, highlighted by a two-run homer by Rachel Laughlin over the wall in center field.  Gretchen Staubach would follow with a two-out RBI double later in the inning, scoring Jess Robertson.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Capital would bring the tying run to the plate with one out, but Dyer would fan the final two batters to lock up the victory.  With the win, Dyer improves to 8-5 on the year.  Julie Rooney led DU at the plate, going 2-for-4 from her lead-off position in the order.

In game two, Capital broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning on a two-run double to center field off Denison starter Kelsey Hager.  After the Crusaders took a 1-0 lead in the third inning Denison would tie things in the fifth thanks to a Grace Finkbiner single that plated Robertson.  In the sixth, Capital would load the bases with two outs.  That's when LeAnna Cotton stroked the game-winning double to the wall in center field.

The split moves Denison's record to 15-11 while Capital moves to 18-8.  The Big Red will return to North Coast Athletic Conference play on Tuesday when they host The College of Wooster at 3:30 p.m.
