The Denison women's tennis team doubled up the 30th-ranked Oberlin Yeowomen, 6-3, on Friday evening in Oberlin, Ohio.
The two teams were all square at the completion of the second and third doubles flights. Oberlin won No. 2 doubles via 8-2 score, while the reunited team of Taylor Hawkins and Audrey Fitzpatrick picked up an 8-3 decision at third doubles.
At the top flight, senior Alex Marcell and junior Kelsey Geppner, the 10th-ranked team in the Central Region, were involved in a war with the central region's third ranked team, Farah Leclercq and Grace Porter. After the first 16 points, the two regionally-ranked teams were all square at 8-8. In the tiebreaker, the Big Red duo edged the team from Oberlin, 8-6, giving Denison a 2-1 edge heading into singles play.
Clinging to a one-point lead, DU went on to win four of the six singles flights to knock off their nationally-ranked opponent. Marcell, Meg Chiumento, Katy Barenholtz and Heather Abzug all picked up three-set victories. In a battle of regionally-ranked foes, 18th-ranked Marcell defeated No. 17 Brenna Sheldon (6-3, 4-6, 7-6) at second singles.
Denison improves to 12-4 on the year, while the Yeowomen fall to 14-5. The Big Red resumes North Coast Athletic Conference West Division play on Sunday when they host 11th-ranked DePauw University at 10 a.m.
