Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Big Red scored 17 runs, pounded out 18 hits and got two strong performances from their pitcher staff on Saturday in Cincinnati, Ohio. All that resulted in a pair of victories over Mount St. Joseph, 6-0 and 11-1.
In the opener, Denison quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-out homer by senior Jess Robertson. The senior's first homer of the year cleared the wall in left center and scored juniors Rachel Laughlin and Meghan Edwards. The Big Red added three more runs in the third thanks to a Lion fielding error, a Robertson single to center and a sacrifice fly to center by Rebecca Dyer.
Dyer was spectacular inside the circle once again en route to her 12th-career shutout, tying former DU hurler Robin Sheskey (1998-01) for third on the school's all-time list. The junior scattered three hits and struck out 11 batters in seven innings of work. Dyer has now recorded double-digit strikeouts in her last three starts (12, 10, 11).
Robertson finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored, while sophomore Emily Lipsitz had a pair of hits and a run scored. Edwards also scored two of DU's six runs.
Looking to match her classmate inside the circle, junior Kelsey Hager toed the rubber in game two against Mount St. Joseph. The junior didn't disappoint as she pitched her second-career no-hitter in the five-inning victory. Hager retired the first six batters she faced before issuing a walk to lead off the third inning. After that free pass, she successfully sat down the next nine batters in a row. Hager allowed one unearned run, walked one and struck out three en route to her third win of the season.
The DU offense gave the junior hurler all the support she needed as they hammered out 10 hits and scored 11 times, including an eight-run fourth frame. In front 3-1 through three innings, the Big Red scored eight times on eight hits and an error. Senior Rosie Glaser knocked in a pair of runs in two plate appearances, while Laughlin roped a two-run double to center. Lipsitz, Robertson, Dyer and senior Kelly Cunningham also drove in a run.
Denison improves to 7-3 on the year, while the Lions fall to 3-7. The Big Red returns to the field on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Northern for a doubleheader against the Polar Bears. Game one is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
