Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 It was a pitchers dual in Delaware and the host Battling Bishops came away with a doubleheader sweep of the Big Red despite scoring only three runs over the course of two games.
Ohio Wesleyan took game one, 1-0, and came away with a 2-1 victory in the night cap.
In game one, Denison got another excellent pitching performance from sophomore Becca Dyer but OWU's Dani Haley scattered two hits over seven innings while striking out 11 batters.
The Bishops scored their lone run in the bottom of the third inning via a squeeze bunt by Erica Bryan that plated Chelsea Denman. That would be the lone threat for OWU as Dyer held the home team to just four hits and one earned run in her six innings of work. She also struck out six.
Denison's pair of hits came from left Kait Fiore via a double in the fifth inning and a Julie Rooney base hit in the first inning.
In game two, Haley returned to the circle and went the distance once again. This time she allowed six hits and one earned run while fanning eight.
Denison countered with Kelsey Hager who was equally outstanding. She gave up three hits and one earned run while striking out seven and was the hard-luck loser after OWU's go-ahead run in the third inning.
In that inning, Brooke Nethers opened with a base hit and advanced to third on a fielding error by the Big Red. Cassi Ladina would ground out and score Nethers with the go-ahead run.
Denison's lone run came in the top of the third after an RBI single by Rachel Laughlin that scored Fiore.
The losses drop Denison's record to 4-6 in NCAC play, while OWU improves to 6-6 in the conference. DU will look to rebound tomorrow when they host Wittenberg in a twinbill beginning at 4 p.m. in Granville.
