Box Score 2 The Big Red split a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at The College of Wooster on Tuesday afternoon. DU won the first game 7-6, but suffered a 3-0 setback in the nightcap.
Denison wasted no time grabbing the lead in game one. After senior Hannah Price and first-year Julie Rooney opened the first with back-to-back walks, sophomore Meghan Edwards hit her first home run of the season with one out to put the Big Red on top 3-0.
The Fighting Scots tied the game at 3-3 thanks to a Gina Pirolozzi homer in the fourth. DU answered in the next inning to retake the lead. Sophomore Rachel Laughlin and Edwards got things going with a one-out single and walk, respectively. Junior Jess Robertson followed with her team-leading fourth homer of the season to regain a 6-3 advantage.
The Denison lead was short lived as an RBI ground out and a two-run single by Danielle Grooms knotted the contest at 6-6. In the sixth, senior Kait Fiore dropped a base hit into right field with one out. After a base-on-balls to Price moved Fiore into scoring position, a misplayed ball in center field hit by Rooney allowed Fiore to score the go-ahead run.
After Erica Villa reached via error to open the bottom of the sixth, sophomore hurler Becca Dyer retired six straight to secure the victory. Dyer struck out six and walked one en route to her third win of the year.
Offensively, Edwards and Robertson both logged two hits, including a home run, with three RBIs. Edwards also scored twice, while Robertson logged a double with a run scored.
In game two, it was Wooster that jumped a head with a solo home run by Lauren Swinehart to open the bottom of the second frame. The Fighting Scots added two more insurance runs in the sixth to support starter Jenn Horton, who held the Denison bats to just three hits.
Rooney, Edwards, and Fiore recorded the three base knocks for DU. Sophomore Kelsey Hager suffered the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on six hits with five strikeouts.
Denison moves to 17-13 overall and 4-4 in the NCAC, while Wooster sits at 18-10 and 5-5 in conference play. The Big Red returns to action on Friday (April 20) when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan. Game one of the twinbill is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
