Dyer perfect again in return

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The much anticipated return of 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Becca Dyer was one for the record books.

After a 6-0 victory in game one, Dyer took the circle in game two and retired all 15 batters in order.  Twelve of those 15 outs were strike outs, and thanks to a 10-run performance by the Big Red offense, the game was called in the fifth and Dyer left with her second career perfect game.

Dyer's first perfect game came on April 1, 2011 in a 9-0 victory over Case Western Reserve that was also called after five innings. After missing the first five weeks of the season with an injury, tonight's debut was never in doubt.  In fact there was only one close call for the Big Red and that came in the top of the fourth when MSJ's Mallory Wright hit a sawed-off infield pop-up that was charged by second baseman Gretchen Staubach.  A diving Staubach squeezed the ball just before it hit the ground for the out.  Dyer would go on to strike out the next five Lion batters for the perfect game.

Denison's offense in game two was alive from the moment the first pitch was thrown.   After a lead-off double by Julie Rooney, Rachel Laughlin doubled to right center, scoring Rooney.  Two more runs would cross the plate on RBIs by Jess Robertson and Heather Larsen.  With two outs in the inning and one runner on, an error by MSJ that should have ended the inning brought Staubach to the plate.  She made the Lions pay by blasting her third home run of the season over the wall in center field, giving her team a 6-0 lead.

In the second inning, DU would score two more runs off a sacrifice fly by Meghan Edwards and a Laughlin RBI single.  Another pair of runs would cross the plate in the third thanks to an RBI double by Rooney and single by Edwards that scored Kait Fiore.

Overall, Denison totaled 13 hits in game two for 10 runs and they did not commit an error.  Staubach was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored.  Laughlin was 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI and Rooney was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI.

Erica D'Arcy suffered the loss for MSJ.  She allowed eight runs off seven hits in one inning of work.  Only five of her runs were earned.

In game one, Kelsey Hager turned in a complete game, five-hit gem that resulted in a 6-0 shutout victory.  Hager struck out six and walked only two in her seven innings of work.  Edwards and Larsen logged two hits apiece for DU in the opener.  With the win, Hager improved to 6-7 on the season.

The sweep sent Denison's record to 15-11 while Mount St. Joseph fell to 5-22.  DU will return to the diamond on Saturday with an NCAC doubleheader at Ohio Wesleyan.  The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Delaware, Ohio.
