Box Score 2 The Big Red snapped a four-game losing skid on Tuesday afternoon thanks to a doubleheader sweep of host John Carroll University. Denison handed the Blue Streaks a 3-1 loss in game one and topped them 7-5 in game two.
In game two, the Big Red utilized a four-run third inning, due in large to a three-run homer by senior centerfielder Hannah Price. Rachel Laughlin and Meghan Edwards would follow with back-to-back doubles, with the latter scoring Laughlin.
Denison would hold that 4-1 lead until the top of the sixth when Julie Rooney smacked a two-run double to the gap in left-center, scoring Rosie Glasier and Gretchen Staubach.
The Blue Streaks would counter with two runs in the home half of the inning but and RBI single by Edwards in the seventh would be all the insurance the Big Red would need to complete the sweep.
Laughlin got the win in the nightcap, going all seven innings while scattering 11 hits and five runs. Edwards was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
In game one, Kelsey Hager went the distance, scattering just two hits and one run in seven innings. Hager fanned four and walked only two as she improved to 4-5 on the year.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when JCU plated the first run of the game. In the sixth, an RBI single by Staubach tied the game and in the seventh, base hits by Edwards and Jess Robertson gave Denison a two-run lead that would hold up.
The wins improve Denison's record to 10-8, while John Carroll falls to 13-7. DU will open North Coast Athletic Conference play this Saturday (March 31) at Allegheny College. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m.
