Box Score 2 Denison closed out its homestand with a pair of losses to Case Western Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans won game one 3-0 and took the nightcap 3-1.
First-year pitchers Rebecca Taylor and Christina Hunger turned out solid performances for Case on the mound. In the opener, Taylor tossed a complete-game two-hit shutout en route to her eighth win of the season. She also picked up her first-career save in game two. Taylor surrendered just one hit in three frames. Hunger tossed the first four innings of the nightcap, allowing one run on six hits.
The Big Red's lone run of the afternoon came in the fourth when sophomore Gretchen Staubach followed up a Meghan Edwards double with a two-bagger to right field. The DU offense struggled generating just nine hits and one run in 14 innings. Rachel Laughlin and Edwards each posted two hits, including one double.
Sophomore Kelsey Hager and Laughlin suffered the losses for Denison. Hager gave up three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in game one, while Laughlin allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits in the second contest.
DU falls to 8-8 on the year, while Case Western Reserve improves to 10-7. The Big Red returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to John Carroll University. Game one of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
