Box Score 2 Capital swept Denison in its home opener on Thursday in Granville. The Crusaders won the opener 6-1, and took game two 14-5.
In game one, Capital jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first frame on the strength of four hits. The Crusaders added another run in both the third and fifth innings. DU's lone run came in the bottom of the seventh when first-year Julie Rooney doubled in classmate Emily Lipsitz. Lipsitz finished with two of the Big Red's seven hits. Sophomore Kelsey Hager dropped to 3-4 on the year after giving up six runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
In the nightcap, the Crusaders pushed across eight runs on nine hits in the opening inning. However, Denison answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. The Big Red trimmed the deficit to 8-5 in the second on an RBI double by Hannah Price, but six unanswered runs by Capital secured the twinbill sweep. Price and Kait Fiore each drove in and scored a run, while Price and Lipsitz both recorded a double. Sophomore Rachel Laughlin took the loss after pitching all seven frames.
The Big Red falls to 8-6 on the season, while the Crusaders improve to 9-5. Denison returns to the diamond on Saturday against Case Western Reserve. First pitch from Granville is slated for 1 p.m.
