Box Score 2 The Big Red softball team won its third-straight game against Edgewood (3-1) before falling to No. 15 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Monday in Tucson, Ariz.
Against Edgewood, sophomore pitcher Rachel Laughlin went the distance en route to her second victory of the season. Laughlin scattered six hits, surrendered one unearned run and struck out two batters in the win.
The Big Red jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second when junior Jess Robertson plated senior Hannah Price on a single to left field. Denison added two more in the fifth thanks to a two-run home run by sophomore Gretchen Staubach. The sophomore's first collegiate hit cleared the wall in left center and scored Heather Larsen from second base.
The Eagles broke up the shutout bid in the sixth, and had the game-tying runs in scoring position with no outs. However, a ground out to the pitcher and a 6-5 double play got Laughlin out of the jam. The sophomore retired the side in order in the seventh to secure the victory.
Offensively, Laughlin and Price both went 2-for-4. Laughlin logged a double, while Price scored a run and swiped a bag. Staubach also had two RBIs and Robertson drove in a run.
Against CMS, Denison tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Robertson that scored Price. However, the Athenas answered with two in the second, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to end the contest in the fifth frame.
Sophomore Kelsey Hager suffered the loss, while Rebecca Gularte picked up the win in relief.
Denison (3-1) returns to the field on Tuesday when they take on Nazareth (3:30 p.m. MST) and Edgewood (6 p.m. MST).
