Denison opens 2012 with a pair of wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Denison softball team opened the 2012 season with victories over Dubuque (7-0) and Dickinson (5-4) on Sunday in Tucson, Ariz.

Against the Spartans, sophomore pitcher Kelsey Hager tossed a complete-game no hitter.  Hager fanned eight batters and issued two walks en route to her first win of the season.  The sophomore hurler carried a perfect game into the sixth inning before issuing a walk to pinch hitter Christina Guy.

Senior Hannah Price went 3-for-4 at the dish, including an RBI triple in the first inning.  In the second, senior Kait Fiore dropped an RBI single into left center that scored sophomore Meghan Edwards.  With two on and two outs, first-year Julie Rooney hit a double to right center that cleared the bases.  Jess Robertson added a solo home run in the third, while Rachel Laughlin and Price each logged RBI singles in the fourth.

Edwards went a perfect 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Fiore logged an RBI and scored twice.

Against the Red Devils, Denison jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first.  Dickinson answered with a single run in the bottom of the first and second to tie the game.  A pair of sacrifice flies by Price and Robertson in the third put DU back on top 4-2.  In the fourth, rookie Emily Lipsitz scored, what proved to be the game winning run, on an error by the pitcher.

The Red Devils shrunk the deficit to one after scoring a run in both the fifth and sixth frames.  In the bottom of the seventh, Madison Gerish drew a leadoff walk for Dickinson.  A sacrifice bunt and a ground out to the pitcher put Gerish 60 feet away from tying the game.  With two outs, Laughlin secured the win by getting Megan O'Neill to fly out to center field.

Price led the way with two RBIs, while Laughlin scored twice and swiped one bag.  Fiore and Rooney each logged a double for DU.  Laughlin picked up the win after allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings of work.

The Big Red (2-0) returns to action on Monday when they take on Edgewood (6 p.m. MST) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (8 p.m. MST).
