Denison wins Bishop Invitational

The Denison volleyball team won the 2011 Bishop Invitational hosted by Ohio Wesleyan after posting the only 4-0 record at the tournament.  The Big Red defeated Earlham 3-0 (25-19, 25-5, 25-15) in Saturday's opener and posted a 3-0 (25-14, 25-16, 25-14) victory over Wilmington to close out the invitational.

Against the Earlham, senior captain Lauren Strowder posted an impressive .533 attacking percentage in just two games.  Strowder hammered down 11 kills and committed just three miscues in 15 attempts.  Fellow seniors Megan Early and Kristen Hughes also added nine and eight kills, respectively.  Senior setter Claire Koneval dished out 23 assists in two sets, while first-year Jessica Borsani logged 20 helpers in two sets.  Sophomore Lauren Gustafson served up a career-high six aces, while senior libero Brooke Beavers recorded a team-high 13 digs to pace the defense.

Against Wilmington, Strowder continued her offensive dominance at the Bishop Invitational.  In the finale, the senior recorded 13 kills in 21 attempts for a .619 hitting percentage.  Hughes added eight kills, while Gustafson logged seven finishers.  Gustafson also had a team-best three aces, while Koneval dished out 39 assists.  On defense, Beavers and rookie Emily Marguerite recorded 14 and 12 digs, respectively, while sophomore Madison Owen logged a solo block and four block assists.

Denison improves to 4-1, and is off to their best start since 2006 when they opened the season with six-straight wins.  The Big Red returns to action on Wednesday (Sept. 7) when they travel to New Concord, Ohio to take on Muskingum University.  Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
