Box Score 2 Denison opened the 2011 North Coast Athletic Conference schedule with a doubleheader sweep of Oberlin on Saturday afternoon from Culhane Field in Oberlin, Ohio. The Big Red doubled up the Yeowomen 8-4 in game one, and took a 4-1 decision in the nightcap.
In the opener, DU erupted for six runs in the fifth to take their first lead of the ball game. An RBI single by senior Erica Evans tied the game at 2-2 with no outs. After a walk to Hannah Price loaded the bases, first-year catcher Meghan Edwards belted her first-career grand slam over the wall in left center. Edwards' first long ball of the season scored Price, Evans and Rachel Laughlin. With the one out and runners at first and second, junior Lauren Lynn sent a base hit back up the middle that drove in Heather Larsen and gave the Big Red a 7-2 lead through four and a half.
Oberlin got RBI singles in both the fifth and sixth, while Evans led off the top of the sixth with a solo shot to left field. Laughlin (3-1) went the distance allowing four runs (three earned) on 11 hits with three strikeouts. Edwards finished game one 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and a run scored to pace the DU offense.
In game two, Evans hit her second homer of the afternoon in the top of the first inning. The senior's two-run bomb to center came two outs and scored Lynn from third. Jessica Robertson added an insurance run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to right, while Kelsey Hager singled in another tally in the sixth. Hager picked up her team-leading eighth win of the year after scattering five hits, giving up one unearned run and striking out four in seven innings of work. Evans finished the day a combined 5-for-9 with two home runs, a double, four RBIs and three runs scored. Kait Fiore also logged a pair of hits in the nightcap.
The Big Red improve to 17-5 overall and 2-0 in the NCAC, while OC falls to 2-14 on the year and 0-2 in the conference. Denison returns to action on Monday (April 11) when they host a doubleheader with Mount St. Joseph. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
