Box Score 2 Denison senior Erica Evans logged five hits and broke two school records in the Big Red's sweep of North Coast Athletic Conference foe Allegheny College on Senior Day in Granville. DU won the opener 5-0 and picked up a 1-0 victory in eight innings in game two.
In game one, Evans became Denison's all-time career hits and RBIs leader following a perfect 4-for-4 performance. In her first at bat of the day, the senior roped a double into the gap in right center. That hit moved her into sole possession of first place on DU's career list, passing former Big Red standouts Claire Kopko and Ali Silver. In the third, Evans blasted a two-out double to center that scored Rachel Laughlin from first and gave Denison a 1-0 lead.
After a base hit in the fourth moved her to 3-for-3 on the day, the table was set for her perfect offensive outing. With one down in the sixth inning, the senior sent a towering fly ball over the wall in left field to give the Big Red a five-run advantage. Her second RBI of the contest moved her past Kopko and into the top spot on the school's career RBI list.
In addition to her outstanding performance at the plate, Evans was equally as impressive in the field. She recorded three putouts and assisted on two more. In the seventh inning, she snagged a pop up for the first out and corralled a pair of ground balls to close out the win.
The Big Red broke the game open with a three-run fourth frame. Karla Dixon knocked in Rebecca Dyer on an RBI single down the right line. Lauren Lynn crossed the dish on a wild pitch that put the Big Red up 3-0, Laughlin followed with a base hit to center that plated Dixon.
Not to be lost in the mix was the dominating performance inside the circle by Dyer. The rookie pitcher went all seven innings, allowed just one hit, struck out nine and walked one en route to her conference-leading sixth shutout of the season.
The second game of the double dip featured a pair of pitching gems from Denison rookie Kelsey Hager and Allegheny senior Amanda Downey. The two hurlers scattered a combined six hits in seven scoreless innings.
Hager struck out Natalie Persicano to open the top of the eighth. Sara Doan reached on a one-out infield hit, while a failed fielder's choice attempt allowed Doan and Halea Hayden to move into scoring position. With one down, head coach Tiffany Ozbun made some defensive changes which brought Laughlin to the mound. The first-year reliever struck out Sophie Katz for the second out and induced a groundout to Lynn to escape the jam unscathed.
In the bottom of the frame, Dixon led off with a base hit up the middle. After a stolen base and a wild pitch moved her to third, Laughlin helped her own cause by sending a 2-2 pitch into right center that scored Dixon and secured an important NCAC sweep.
Laughlin improved to 5-1 on the season after striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. Hager scattered four hits and struck out four in the no decision. Offensively, Dixon logged four hits on the day with an RBI and two runs scored.
DU improves to 25-7 overall and 10-2 in the NCAC, while the Gators fall to 7-21 and 4-10 in the league. By way of a split between Ohio Wesleyan and Hiram, Denison can secure the top spot in next weekend's NCAC Tournament with a twinbill sweep of Kenyon College. The Big Red will host the Ladies on Sunday (May 1) at 1 p.m.
