Box Score 2 After six and half scoreless frames, Rachel Laughlin drove in the game-winning run with two outs in Denison's 1-0 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with Ohio Wesleyan University. The Big Red dropped a 4-1 decision to the Battling Bishops in the nightcap.
After escaping her second jam of the game, Rebecca Dyer helped her own cause with a lead-off single in the bottom of the seventh. Karla Dixon dropped a picture perfect sacrifice bunt to move the runner into scoring position, while Lauren Lynn followed with a single into left that put runners at the corners. With two down, Laughlin blasted a pitch to right center that bounced off the center fielder's glove and fell to the grass allowing Dyer to score the game-winning run from third.
The story of game one was the classic duel inside the circle between Dyer and OWU's Dani Haley. The two hurlers gave up a combined 12 hits and notched 12 strikeouts. Both pitcher found themselves in jams in the later stages of the game. In the bottom of the fifth, Dyer belted a one-out double into left field. Pinch runner Heather Larsen moved to third on a two-out single by Lynn, but Haley shut down the threat with a strikeout.
In the top of the next inning, Dyer experienced some trouble of her own as the Battling Bishops opened the frame with a pair of singles. The rookie hurler got Tara VanVranken to strikeout swinging and Abby Walsh to foul out to Jessica Robertson. With two down, Jackie Kolovich lined a single through the left side of the infield to load the bases. Dyer escaped the jam by getting Haley, who entered as a pinch hitter, to foul out to Robertson.
For the second time, Dyer gave up a pair of singles to open the seventh. The runners moved up into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Jen Anderson. After a walk to Brooke Nethers loaded the bases with one out, OWU's Kaylie Titus stepped up to the plate with a prime opportunity to drive in the game's first run. After Dyer blew two fastballs past the Bishop third baseman, she changed speeds with a breaking ball and got Titus fan on a third strike. Dyer set up the Big Red's dramatic finish by inducing a ground ball to shortstop Erica Evans.
Dyer improved to 8-3 on the season after scattering five hits and striking out seven in seven frames. The win also marked her fifth complete-game shutout of the season. Lynn, Laughlin and Dyer all had two hits in the opener. Dyer had a double and a run scored, while Laughlin posted the game's only RBI.
Haley (6-4) suffered the loss after giving up a run on seven hits with five Ks. Nethers, Titus, Kolovich, Lauren Elkins and Erica Bryan represented the five Ohio Wesleyan hits.
In game two, the Battling Bishops plated four runs in the opening two frames and held the DU offense to just three hits en route to earning the twinbill split. Denison broke up the shutout bid when Robertson scored on a fielding error in the fifth. Rookie Kelsey Hager took the loss after giving up four runs on eight hits in seven frames. Robertson went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Denison moves to 22-6 overall and 7-1 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while OWU sits at 17-11 and 6-2 in the league. The Big Red return to action on Saturday (April 23) when they travel to Hiram College for a twinbill with the Terriers. Game one is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
