Winning streak to five after sweep at Witt

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

After gutting out a 3-1 win in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Wittenberg, the Big Red exploded with an eight-run fifth inning in game two resulting in a sweep of the Tigers in Springfield, Ohio.  The pair of wins moves Denison's current winning streak to five games.  They also improve to 4-0 in North Coast Athletic Conference play.

With the nightcap tied 2-2 in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Denison's Kait Fiore in the third, DU got things going in the fifth when Jessica Robertson doubled up the middle to start things off.  With one out, Karla Dixon broke the tie with a double that scored Robertson.  A wild pitch would move Dixon to third and after a walk by Lauren Lynn, Fiore would drive in Dixon with a fielders choice.

Now with two outs and the bases loaded, Erica Evans slapped a two-run single up the middle and Meghan Edwards reached on an infield single loading the bases for the dangerous Robertson who capped off the inning with a grand slam, scoring Edwards, Hannah Price, and Evans while expanding the DU lead to 10-2.

The Tigers would respond with four runs in the fifth and one in the sixth but Rachel Laughlin would slam the door in the seventh, in relief of Kelsey Hager.

In the opener, DU scored two runs in the first inning due in a large part to three errors by the Tiger defense.  Denison's first run was scored via an Evans sacrifice fly and the second came on a sacrifice fly by Price, which scored Fiore.

DU's third run would come in the top of the third inning when Price sent a shot back to the pitcher that scored Laughlin from third after she led off the inning with a double to right field.

The Tigers' lone run on game one would follow in the bottom of the fifth via a sacrifice fly by Katelyn Davis that scored Fallon White.

Laughlin went the distance in game one en route to her fourth victory of the season.   She allowed one run, scattered five hits and stuck out five.  The rookie followed that performance with a one-hit relief outing in game two.  Laughlin logged her second save of the season after striking out one in 1.1 innings.  Hager picked up her team-leading ninth victory in game two.  She worked 5.2 innings while allowing 10 hits and four earned runs to go along with four strikeouts.

Fiore was 2-for-4 in game two with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Her home run in the third inning was the first of her career.  Robertson raised her batting average to .475 by going 3-for-4 in game two with four RBIs and two runs scored.  In game one, Lynn was 2-for-3 with one run scored and a walk.

Denison improves to 19-5 overall and 4-0 in the NCAC with the sweep while Wittenberg drops to 8-15 overall and 2-2 in conference play.  The Big Red will return to action on Saturday (April 16) when they host The College of Wooster at 1 p.m.
