Box Score 2 The Denison University softball team split a doubleheader with John Carroll University on Tuesday afternoon in Granville, Ohio. The Big Red took the opener 3-2, while the Blue Streaks won the nightcap 11-3.
In game one, DU opened the bottom of the third with back-to-back walks. After an infield fly to the catcher, senior Erica Evans dropped a single into left center to load the bases. With two outs, junior Hannah Price belted a two-run single into right center that scored Lauren Lynn and Heather Larsen. Following a walk to Rachel Laughlin that loaded the bags once again, rookie catcher Meghan Edwards drew a base-on-balls that scored Evans.
First-year pitcher Rebecca Dyer held JCU to two hits, issued one free pass and struck out two over the first five innings. In the sixth, the Blue Streaks struck for two thanks to a two-RBI double to right center from Angela Vistocco, but it wasn't enough as DU edged out the 3-2 win.
Price finished with two of Denison's three hits, while Evans logged the other base knock. Price drove in two of the three runs and stole one base, while Lynn, Evans and Larsen represented the three Big Red scores. Dyer went the distance as she improved to 5-1 on the year. The rookie scattered five hits, gave up two runs and struck out two.
In the second game, John Carroll scored five runs in both the first and third innings en route to taking a 10-2 lead through three frames. The early outburst proved to be enough as DU struggled to push runs across the plate in the nightcap. Laughlin was a triple away from the cycle as she went 3-for-4 with a home run, double, two RBIs and a run, while Lynn logged a pair of hits and Kait Fiore legged out a triple and scored once.
First-year Kelsey Hager suffered her first loss of the season after issuing three walks and giving up four runs in a third of an inning. Laughlin entered in relief and gave up one earned run on eight hits with two Ks in 6.2 innings.
Denison moves to 11-3 on the year, while JCU sits at 10-4. The Big Red returns to action on Friday (April 1) when they travel to Case Western Reserve University. First pitch of the twinbill is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
