Box Score 4 The Denison University softball posted a pair of 5-0 victories over Marian and Schreiner on the final day of their spring trip to Tucson, Ariz. The Big Red return to Granville with an 8-2 record.
In addition to Friday's twinbill sweep, DU split a pair of contests on Thursday at the Tucson Invitational Games. Denison dropped Thursday's opener to No. 11 Central 16-7, but rebounded in the second game with a 13-7 victory over Rutgers-Newark.
On Thursday, sophomore Jessica Robertson went a combined 6-for-8 with a home run, two doubles, six RBIs and three runs scored. Against Rutgers-Newark, junior Hannah Price went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, while Lauren Lynn had two hits, drove in two and scored twice. Kelsey Hager got the win in relief after giving up just one run, scattering five hits and striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.
Against Schreiner, rookie pitcher Rebecca Dyer struck out a career-high 12 batters en route to her third victory of 2011. The first-yer hurler scattered four hits and walked one in seven innings. In addition to her outstanding performance on the rubber, Dyer also hit her first-collegiate home run. Her two-run shot came in the bottom of the seventh with no outs. Lynn, Robertson and senior Erica Evans all logged multiple hits in the game.
Against Marian, Hager improved to 4-0 after pitching a four-hit shutout with five Ks. Lynn, Heather Larsen and Meghan Edwards had two hits apiece and scored once. Lynn, Larsen, Kait Fiore and Karla Dixon all had extra base hits.
The Big Red return to action on Wednesday (March 23) when they take on Muskingum University in their home opener. First pitch from Granville is slated for 5:30 p.m.
