Big Red win high scoring affair on the west coast

Jenny Strathern scored four goals and added a career-high six assists while freshman Lanning McDonald posted a career-best six goals, leading Denison to a 21-16 win over Whittier College on Thursday evening. 

DU built a 12-6 advantage in the first half behind three goals and three assists from Strathern.  Denison outshot the Poets 22-15 in the first 30 minutes of play while going 3-for-7 on 8-meter attempts.  In the second half the Poets started to make a comeback.  Powered by six unanswered goal streak over a five minute period, Whittier pulled to within three goals at 15-12 with 23 minutes left in the contest.

Denison would respond by scoring six of the next seven goals to pull back out to a 21-13 lead with 12 minutes remaining.  During that six-goal run which sealed the victory, McDonald would score three times and Phoebe Myhrum would add two of her five goals.

Strathern's 10 points and McDonald's eight points were both career high's.  Myhrum ended with seven points after scoring five goals and adding two assists.  Denison also got three goals from Olivia Shiland.  Defensively, Alex Thurner paced DU with four ground balls and five caused turnovers.  Carly Tschantz ended with six draw controls and Molly Cornbrooks chipped in five draws.

Whittier was led by Carolyn Mukai's eight goals and three assists.  Conny Joel had 10 saves for the Poets and Laura Campbell turned in eight saves for the Big Red.

The combined 37 goal output by both teams marked the most goals in a game played by a Denison squad since a 26-11 win over Wittenberg in 2001.

Denison will continue their west coast swing on Friday night at Redlands.
