Big Red victorious over rival OWU

Box Score

Less than 24 hours after rallying to win a 3-2 decision over Kenyon, the Big Red were in another dog fight against North Coast Athletic Conference rival Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.  Trailing the match 2-1, Denison won back-to-back sets en route to a 3-2 win over the Battling Bishops.

DU jumped out to a 1-0 lead after posting a 25-18 decision in the first set.  However, OWU battled back to win the next two sets by scores of 25-20 and 27-25.  Feeding off the belief generated from Friday night's come-from-behind win over the Ladies, the Big Red forced a fifth and final set after picking up a 25-14 decision.  Denison completed the rally with a 15-10 win in the fifth and deciding set.

Senior Lauren Strowder led all hitters with a game-high 21 kills, while classmates Megan Early and Kristen Hughes logged 15 and 10 kills, respectively.  Senior setter Claire Koneval dished out 60 assists, while first-year Emily Marguerite served up a career-high four aces.  Defensively, senior Brittany Brannon registered a career-best 25 digs, while fellow senior Brooke Beavers had 19 and Marguerite added 14 digs.  At the net, Early logged two solo blocks and four block assists, while Hughes had one solo block and four block assists.

The Bishops were led by Megan Weissenberger's 19 kills and Katie Fain's 11 kills and three aces.  Emily Stewart paced the OWU defense with 23 digs, while Tamra Londot had a solo block and five block assists.

Denison closes out the 2011 season with a 12-16 record overall and a 7-9 league mark.
