Box Score Entering the third set tied at 1-1, DePauw rattled off back-to-back victories to secure a 3-1 win over Denison on Saturday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind. The victory gave the Tigers a 2-0 season sweep over the Big Red in 2011.
Denison dropped a close first set 25-23 when they gave up two straight points to DePauw after the set was deadlocked at 23. In set two, the Big Red was able to tie the match at one set apiece when they dropped the Tigers 25-22. Leading 24-18 in the second set after an Elsa Manning kill, DePauw reeled off four straight points before Big Red senior Kristen Hughes ended the set with a kill of her own.
However, DePauw would outscore the Big Red 50-29 in the final two sets en route to its 19th win of the season. Abby Balbach's 22 kills led the way for the Tigers, while Katie Petrovich and Annie Collier followed with 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
For the Big Red, seniors Lauren Strowder and Hughes posted 17 and 11 kills, respectively. Claire Koneval accounted for 40 of her team's 43 assists. Defensively, Brooke Beavers and Koneval combined for 24 digs.
Denison falls to 10-15 overall and 5-8 in North Coast Athletic Conference, while DePauw improves to 19-10 and 10-4 in league play. The Big Red returns to the court at Hiram on Tuesday (Oct. 25). Match time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
