Wittenberg shuts out Big Red

Wittenberg swept the season series with Denison following a 3-0 (25-8, 25-9, 25-18) decision on Wednesday in North Coast Athletic Conference action from Springfield, Ohio.

After a pair of lopsided Wittenberg victories, Denison fought tough in the third game.  After falling into a quick four-point hole, the Big Red trimmed the deficit to 8-5.  The Tigers orchestrated a 5-1 run to regain a 13-6 advantage.  Trailing by seven points, DU rattled off six of the next eight points to shrink the margin to 15-12.  However, Wittenberg outscored Denison 10-6 to close out the final set and secure the match.

Senior Lauren Strowder and sophomore Madison Owen paced the Big Red attack with five kills each, while Claire Koneval dished out 16 assists.  Defensively, Brooke Beavers notched 14 digs, and Owen registered two blocks.

The Tigers were led by Kimmie Dyer's 11 kills and Katie Sumner's eight finishers.  Setter Hallie Donathan handed out 24 assists, while Christina Gilene and Meghan Vodopich each served up two aces.  Gilene paced the defense with 20 digs, while Miranda Sagle had four block assists.

Denison falls to 10-14 overall and 5-7 in the NCAC, while Wittenberg improves to 25-2 and 14-0 in league play.  The Big Red returns to action on Saturday when they travel to DePauw for a 1 p.m. match.
