Megan Soulz tossed a complete-game shutout as the DePauw University Tigers moved on in the winner's bracket of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament following a 5-0 victory over the Denison Big Red on Thursday afternoon in Greencastle, Ind.
DePauw took the early lead in the bottom of the first on a two-out, two-run home run by Emma Minx. The Tigers added two more runs to their lead in the fifth thanks to an RBI single to left center by Minx and a one-out double by Amy Hallet that scored Minx from second base.
Following the RBI double, Denison head coach Tiffany Ozbun made a call to the bullpen to senior Leslie Brenner (Deerfield, Ill./Deerfield). After hitting the first batter she faced in the fifth, Brenner fanned Haley Buchanan for the second out of the inning. DePauw knocked in their third run of the frame on an infield hit to the shortstop. Brenner managed to get out of the inning when Cymone Allen was called out for runner interference on her way to third.
Soulz carried a perfect game through 4.1 innings before back-to-back singles by senior Alex Murray (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/NDCL) and sophomore Hannah Price (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson) broke up the no hitter. Soulz earned the win for DePauw after scattering two hits and striking out three in seven innings of action.
Big Red senior Samantha Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) suffered the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) off nine hits with two walks and a strikeout. In relief, Brenner held the high-powered Tiger offense to just two hits over 1.2 innings of work. The senior has now tossed 158.1 innings this season, which moved her past Courtney Zollars as the school's single-season leader.
DU falls to 30-16, while the Tigers improve to 36-6 overall. Denison returns to the field on Friday when they take on third-seeded Washington University-St. Louis in the second elimination game of the tournament at noon. The Bears dropped a 4-2 decision to sixth-seeded Transylvania earlier in the day.
