No. 5 Denison dispatches Oberlin

After a nine-day layoff between matches, the No. 5 Denison Big Red returned to action on Friday afternoon with a 9-0 victory over Oberlin College from the indoor courts at the Mitchell Recreation Center.

In the most anticipated match-up of the day, Denison's Marta Drane (Wilmington, Del/Tower Hill), who entered the match ranked second in the central region, posted a three-set victory over the region's No. 5 ranked player, Ariel Lewis.  Drane dropped the opening set 2-6 to Lewis but stormed back with a 6-4 win in the second.  In the decisive third set super tiebreaker, Drane topped Lewis 10-5 to lock up her 13th victory of the season.  The loss drops Lewis' record to 14-3.

Denison's remaining five singles victories were all straight-set wins.  At No. 1 doubles, Drane and Kristin Cobb (Dayton, Ohio/Oakwood) topped Lewis and Finley Gates, 8-2 to improve to 15-6 overall and 8-5 in dual matches.  Drane and Cobb moved up to second in the latest ITA central region rankings.

DU improves to 12-3 with the victory and will return to action on Tuesday (April 20) when they take on Division I, Dayton at 4:30 p.m.
