Big Red topple Kenyon in five; winning streak moves to four

Lauren Strowder (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) posted double-digit kills for the 13th time this season and Claire Koneval (Solon, Ohio/Solon) chipped in 39 assists as the Denison Big Red held off the host, Kenyon College Ladies for a 3-2 (19-25, 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9) win from Tomisch Arena in Gambier, Ohio.

The victory marked the fourth-straight for the Big Red who improve their season mark to 7-13 while evening their record in North Coast Athletic Conference play at 3-3.

The Big Red suffered a 25-19 loss in the opening set while posting just four kills and an .042 attack percentage.  As has been the norm of late, the Big Red continued to heat up as the match went on.  After knotting the score at 1-1, DU took a 2-1 lead through three sets after racking up 11 kills and a .375 attack percentage.

The Ladies rebounded to take a closely contested fourth set, but in the deciding fifth set, Kenyon committed four errors and DU responded with the 15-9 win.  This marked the second five-set victory of the season for the Big Red.

Leading the way offensively was Strowder who finished with 15 kills.  She entered the match leading the NCAC in kills per set and she improved her season average to 3.22 kps after tonight's performance.  Following Strowder was Lauren Gustafson (Los Angeles, Calif./Palisades Charter), Megan Early (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren) and Kristen Hughes (Dowington, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) who posted eight kills apiece.  Lauren Weidner (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) had 14 digs and two service aces while Early paced the Big Red with four blocks.

Kenyon was led in kills by Laura Harris who finished with 12.  Kelly Heilman had 44 assists to go along with six aces and Crystal Prias led with way with 19 digs.

Kenyon falls to 10-10 overall and 3-3 in the NCAC with the loss.  Denison will look to extend their winning streak to five matches tomorrow night (Oct. 9) when they host Oberlin College at 5 p.m.
