Wooster needs four sets to get by Big Red

The College of Wooster improved to 8-4 in the North Coast Athletic Conference following a 3-1 (25-21, 25-9, 23-25, 25-23) victory over the Denison Big Red on Saturday afternoon from Livingston Gymnasium.  The loss dipped the Big Red's conference record to 6-7, setting up a critical conference finale next Saturday against Allegheny College as the Big Red continue to fight for the fourth and final NCAC Tournament seed.

The Scots opened with a 25-21 victory in the first set and dominated the second set, 25-9.  In the third the Big Red responded with a 25-23 win before falling by the same score in the pivotal fourth set.  Denison was led by juniors Megan Early (Findlay, Ohio/Van Buren) and Lauren Strowder's (Cleveland Heights, Ohio/Cleveland Heights) nine-kill performances.  Freshman Madison Owen (Novi, Mich./Northville) chipped in six kills off just 16 attempts.  Claire Koneval (Solon, Ohio/Solon) paced the Big Red with 31 assists and Brooke Beavers (Sylvania, Ohio/St. Ursula) led the way with three aces.

Prior to the contest senior Lauren Weidner (Barrington, Ill./Barrington) was honored for her contributions to the Big Red program.  She went on to post a match-high 34 digs.  Weidner leads the NCAC in digs with 6.11 per set.

Wooster was led by Erica Skillman and Paige Parker who had 12 kills apiece.  Lissi Beal led the way with 25 assists and Kelly Jonson posted 21 digs.  Wooster improves to 17-12 overall while Denison's record drops to 10-17.

Denison will close out the 2010 regular season next Saturday (Oct. 30) when they host Allegheny and Rose-Hulman in a tri-match beginning at 11 a.m. from Livingston Gymnasium.
