Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Denison Hands Wooster First Loss of Season, Barnhart Ties Program Record for Assists in a Game

Wooster, Ohio - After a postponement last Friday, Denison and Wooster were able to hit the turf in a battle of the conference's best, and the Big Red came out victorious in a 17-9 decision. MK Barnhart tied the program record for most assists in a game with seven, and Finlay Harmon and Mary Martinson each recorded four goals in the win. Denison moves to 10-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while Wooster falls to 10-1 and 1-1 in conference play.

The two squads would battle back and forth throughout the first quarter, with the Fighting Scots delivering the first goal of the game to go up 1-0. After a tight defensive battle, Denison was able to get on the board from a goal by Madison Goldstein and an assist from Bridget Sheehy. Just a minute later, Wooster would answer to go up once again, but Finlay Harmon fired a shot from MK Barnhart into the back of the net to tie the game up for the second time. After another Wooster score, Denison picked up the pace on the offensive end, scoring three unanswered from Mary Martinson, Josie Pruss, and Harmon to take a 5-3 lead heading into the second quarter. Both teams had seven shots and five on target, while Juliane Hennigan saved two shots.

The offense continued to shine, as Martinson netted her second goal of the game to extend the lead to three, but Wooster would answer on their own to bring it back 6-4. Grayson O'Marra got in on the action after a free position shot scored to make it 7-4, and Goldstein fired her second shot from Sophie Davenport to go up half the Fighting Scots goals, 8-4. A caused turnover from Courtney Wolfington would turn into another score for the Big Red, this time from Addie Clift, to give Denison its largest lead of the game so far, 9-4. Wooster would score one more before the half, but the Big Red sat in the driver's seat heading into the second half, 9-5.

Denison scored on two power play goals, and scooped up seven ground balls in the second quarter. Martinson, Harmon, and Goldstein each had two goals in the first half alone, and Barnhart dished off three assists.

The Big Red picked up right where they left off, with O'Marra scoring her second goal of the game, and Harmon, along with Martinson, notching hat tricks to put Denison up 12-6 with 10 minutes to go. Not even a minute later, Martinson would score her fourth of the game, and the assist by Barnhart would be her seventh, tying a program record for most in a single game. Caitlin McLearn pushed the lead to eight before Wooster stopped the Denison run to make it 14-7 with under six minutes to play.

Harmon followed up Martinson's four-piece with one of her own with an assist from Barnhart to extend the lead to eight, and Pruss scored her second to take a commanding 16-7 lead heading into the final frame. Denison outscored Wooster 7-2 in the third, ultimately becoming the deciding 15 minutes of play in the game.

Both squads slowed down the pace in the fourth, as Wooster got on the board twice before Anie Savarese scored the final goal of the game to give Denison a 17-9 victory and their 10th win of the season, while also giving Wooster their first loss of the year.
