Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 6 Big Red Pounce On Blue Streaks to Advance to NCAC Tournament Championship

Granville, Ohio - A rainy Wednesday evening would not slow down the No. 6 ranked Denison women's lacrosse team, as they sailed by John Carroll 19-7 for their 14th-straight win and a trip to the NCAC Tournament Championship. Three Big Red notched hat tricks, with senior Mary Martinson scoring a season-high five goals on all of her five shot attempts. Denison now improves to 17-1 overall, while John Carroll concludes their first season in the NCAC at 9-7.

Denison went a different route than the first meeting with John Carroll, as they scored half of what they did last Saturday in seven minutes to go up 5-0 early. The charge was led by Martinson who had two goals, and Finlay Harmon, Grayson O'Marra, and Sophie Davenport each netted one of their own to kick off the hot start. The Blue Streaks were able to get on the board, but Harmon would cash in her second of the day in the final minutes before John Carroll got one back to go up 6-2 heading into the second quarter. The Big Red scored two power play goals and went perfect on clears.

Feeding off the momentum from the first, the Big Red scored two goals within a minute, as Emersen Thompson and Madison Goldstein scored their first of the game to give Denison a comfortable 8-2 lead early. Thompson would then score her second minutes later before the Blue Streaks stopped the bleeding, netting a goal to make it 9-3 in favor of the Big Red. After solid defensive play from both squads ensued, Thompson would then blast her second goal for to end the drought and go up 10-4 to end the first half. The Big Red secured all six draw controls in the second quarter to add to their offensive presence.

A near flawless start to the second half propelled the Big Red, outscoring the Blue Streaks 5-1 in the third quarter alone led by Martinson, who had the first two goals of the quarter, and Bridget Sheehy scoring two as well. Goldstein added her second on a power play, and Denison rolled into the fourth quarter up 15-5.

Denison continued the offensive attack, as Goldstein secured a hat trick off of a feed from Sheehy to make it 16-5, and Martinson tallied her fifth of the game to keep up the scoring. After a Blue Streak goal, Denison would secure two more, as Addie Clift netted a shot off of a free position attempt, and Anie Savarese scored shortly after to give Denison their final goal of the game and a 19-7 win at home.
