University Heights, Ohio - Denison women's lacrosse hit the road for a weekend conference matchup against John Carroll and outscored the Blue Streaks 5-1 in the second half to pull away for a big-time win, 10-6. The Big Red was paced by first-year
Finlay Harmon, who had three goals on five shots in the win. Denison now improves to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in conference play. John Carroll drops to 9-6 and 4-3 in conference.
The Blue Streaks kicked off the scoring at the 12-minute mark to make it 1-0 early on. Senior
Bridget Sheehy would fire in the equalizer only a minute later to knot the game up at one apiece. After good defensive play from both teams and shots not landing, fellow senior
Madison Goldstein broke the dry spell with a goal of her own to put the Big Red up 2-1. The Blue Streaks would get the last laugh, however, scoring two unanswered in the final minute of play to take the early 3-2 lead heading into the second quarter.
Denison would stay aggressive early in the second quarter, applying pressure but failing to score. John Carroll responded with their third unanswered goal, extending their lead to 4-2. Denison remained composed and quickly rattled off three straight goals in under two minutes—Sheehy,
Mary Martinson, and
Sophie Davenport each contributing—to reclaim a 5-4 lead, their second of the game. The Blue Streaks then tied it at 5-5 with five minutes left, and that score held to end the quarter.
Both teams continued their strong defensive prowess from the first half, as the first 10 minutes of play went scoreless. With 4:30 to go, the Big Red finally broke through, as
Finlay Harmon scored off a dish from Sheehy to put the Big Red up 6-5. Davenport then added her second of the game on a man-up goal, giving the Big Red a two-score lead heading into the final frame.
John Carroll would build some much-needed momentum, scoring 36 seconds into the fourth, to bring it within one once again. After a save from goalie
Julianne Henigan, Denison propelled from its aggressive defense, extended its lead to two following a goal by
Emersen Thompson, for an 8-6 advantage. Harmon would score two out of her three goals in the fourth, shutting down any chance of a comeback for the Blue Streaks. Her second goal of the day was a rocket to the back of the net with under six minutes remaining, putting Denison up 9-6, and then she scored again with 34 seconds remaining for the final dagger, 10-6.
