Big Second Half Lifts No. 9 Denison to Top-10 Win Over No. 6 Washington and Lee

Granville, Ohio - Denison outscored Washington and Lee 10-3 in the second half to pull away for a big-time top-10 win at home, 15-11. Emerson Thompson and Bridget Sheehy tallied hat tricks and an assist, while the team had seven caused turnovers in the win. This was Denison's fourth ranked win of the season, and moved to 14-1 overall, continuing their win streak which now spans to 11.

The Generals got off to a hot start, scoring three goals in a span of five minutes to get the Big Red on their heels early. Madison Goldstein was finally able to get Denison on the board from an assist by Finlay Harmon, but Washington and Lee would strike back with a goal of their own. With under four minutes to go, the Big Red rattled off two goals, as Emersen Thompson rifled one to the back of the net by herself, and MK Barnhart added a man-up goal with 37 seconds left to leave Denison down one heading into the second quarter, 4-3. The Big Red had eight shots in the first quarter, with six of them being on target.

Just as they did to start the game, Washington and Lee would come out on fire, scoring three unanswered, including a man-up goal, to take a 7-3 lead halfway through the second quarter. Goldstein added her second goal of the game from an assist from Barnhart to make it 7-4. After another score from Washington and Lee, the Big Red gained much needed momentum, as Barnhart flipped a pass over the goal to Thompson who quickly flicked her stick for a goal to go down three once again into the half, 8-5.

The Big Red would completely flip the script in the second half, with Mary Martinson scoring by herself to bring the contest within two, and Sophie Davenport netted another off of an assist from Barnhart to go down 8-7. With under 10 minutes to play, Bridget Sheehy would capitalize on the previous Big Red success, as she would score back-to-back goals to give Denison their first lead of the game and cap off a 5-0 run.

Washington and Lee would not go away easily, as the Generals scored back-to-back goals of their own to go up 10-9, but Denison returned the favor once again, scoring two-straight in the final two minutes to take back the lead 11-10 heading into the fourth quarter. Denison tallied seven shots on goal, and scored on two power plays to take advantage of the Generals' mistakes.

Heading into the fourth quarter, Martinson continued the offensive attack, as she scored her second goal of the day on a free position shot to give Denison a two-goal lead. Sheehy would then cap off her hat trick with another man-up goal, and Thompson would follow suit for her third of the game, giving Denison a 14-10 lead with under 10 minutes remaining.

The Big Red posed strong defensive play in the next seven minutes of play until the Generals got on the board once more to bring it within three. The Denison defense stayed steady the last couple minutes, and Finlay Harmon would put the exclamation mark with a rocket into the net for her first goal of the game and ultimately the final, 15-11. Denison outshot Washington and Lee 17-12 in the second half, and scored five power play goals in the process.
