GRANVILLE, Ohio. — Denison softball swept Ohio Wesleyan in Saturday's home doubleheader, rolling to an 11–1 five-inning victory in game one before holding off a late rally for a 9–7 win in game two at Big Red Softball Field. With these wins, the Big Red are 14-16 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
Game 1: Denison 11, Ohio Wesleyan 1
Denison wasted no time taking control in the opening frame.
Brooke Surbaugh delivered an RBI single before
Leilah Ferrari launched a grand slam to give the Big Red a 5–0 lead after the first inning.
The offense struck again in the third, scoring six runs on five hits. Ferrari hit an RBI double,
Alex Longstreth added a run-scoring single, and Surbaugh contributed a two-run single, pushing the lead to 11–0.
Ohio Wesleyan scored its lone run in the fourth inning, but Denison quickly closed out the victory in the fifth.
Ferrari led the offense by going 2-for-3 with five RBIs and two runs scored, highlighted by her first-inning grand slam. Surbaugh also had a strong day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Longstreth added an RBI hit, while
Madilyn Moffitt drew a bases-loaded walk.
In the circle, Surbaugh tossed a complete-game two-hitter while allowing just one unearned run over five innings. She walked one and induced eight groundouts on only 54 pitches to earn her sixth win of the season.
Game 2: Denison 9, Ohio Wesleyan 7
Game two followed a similar script early as Denison built a 9–3 lead through four innings.
Emerson Seevers started the scoring with an RBI double in the first. Liana "Seri" Su added an RBI single.
In the third, Moffitt delivered an RBI double, and Ferrari drove in two with a single. Denison answered Ohio Wesleyan's rally in the fourth with three runs, highlighted by Surbaugh's RBI single. Ohio Wesleyan scored four runs over the final two innings, but Surbaugh entered in relief and secured her third save of the season.
Seevers led the offense at 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and three runs. Moffitt added two RBIs, and Ferrari drove in two more.
Moffitt earned the win in game two, improving to 7-6. Surbaugh collected a save and drove in four runs.
Cassie Heinauer pitched one inning in game two, striking out one and allowing one hit for two runs in the sixth.
