Surbaugh Homers Twice, Big Red Sweep Cardinals in Midweek Doubleheader

Westerville, Ohio - Brooke Surbaugh mashed two home runs in a high-explosive offensive affair from the Big Red in a sweep of Otterbein, 6-3 and 9-1. Eight Big Red had multi-hit games across the twinbill, and totaled 25 hits and 15 runs while only allowing nine hits on the defensive end. Denison improves to 12-16, while Otterbein falls to 10-18.

Game One: Denison 6, Otterbein 3

Otterbein drew first blood with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second for the first run of the game. In the top of the third, the Big Red started to catch fire, as Carley Melton singled, Madilyn Moffitt walked, and Brooke Surbaugh singled to set up bases loaded with one out. Liana "Seri" Su would capitalize on the opportunity, smacking a two-run double to left center to give Denison a 2-1 lead. Brianna Gonzalez decided to get in on the action as well, batting a double of her own that would score two for a four-spot third inning, putting Denison up 4-1.

Surbaugh would start to dial in, striking out two in the bottom of the third to keep the three-run lead steady. Up 4-2 in the top of the fifth, Surbaugh belted a solo home run to left center field to give the Big Red a 5-2 lead. It was Surbaugh's second home run of the season.

After the Cardinals scored a run on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fifth, the Big Red added an insurance run off the bat of Surbaugh once again to give Denison a 6-3 lead, which they would hold on to the end of the game for a victory.

Denison registered 12 hits, with Melton, Su and Surbaugh earning multi-hit games. Surbaugh totaled two RBIs off of her three-hit day, as well as Su and Gonzalez driving in two.

Surbaugh would have a solid day on the mound, going the distance allowing five hits, five walks, two earned runs and five strikeouts for her fifth win of the season.

Game Two: Denison 9, Otterbein 1

The bats were alive and well still heading into game two, as Denison got on the board early with a run scored from Leilah Ferrari, and Surbaugh would continue her standout game one with her second homer of the day to put the Big Red up 3-0 early.

Otterbein would notch a run to bring the scoring within two, but three walks would leave the bases loaded in the third inning, and Gonzalez would unload a base-clearing triple to blow the scoring open and a now five-run lead, 6-1.

Surbaugh continued to shine in the fourth inning, ripping a single to left field to score Moffitt for the seventh run of the game.

Moffitt was dialed on the mound, striking out five and only allowing four hits through five innings. She finished her day with

The runs continued to pour in, as Seevers singled to left field to bring home Alex Longstreth in the sixth, and brought one more run in the seventh for an added insurance run to give Denison the sweep in Westerville, 9-1.

Six Big Red registered hits in game two, with Seevers and Gonzalez having three-hit games. Surbaugh and Gonzalez drove in three runs apiece, and Surbaugh's home run was her third of the season. Ferrari clocked in a double in her two-hit day, and Longstreth went 2-for-3 at the dish with a walk and two runs.

Last week's NCAC Pitcher of the Week Madilyn Moffitt kept true to her title, pitching a complete game with 107 pitches thrown and only giving up four hits, one earned run, and striking out six in the win.
