Tiffin, Ohio: Following a 3-0 weekend at home, Division III's No. 1 team got back on the road for a midweek matchup Heidelberg University to take on the Student Princes. The Big Red were able to extend the season win streak to 24 with a 17-1 victory over the OAC foe. Cade Nowik and Eron Vega led the way at the plate while Cooper Marrs earned the win on the mound. Denison moves to 25-1 on the year while Heidelberg drops to 13-15.
No. 1 Denison 17, Heidelberg 1 (7 Innings)
Division III baseball's unanimous No. 1 team got back to action on the road against the Student Princes of Heidelberg. A pair of walks allowed Erik Sundgren and Kelly Crittenberger to strike first and put the Big Red up 3-0 in its first at bat. Cooper Marrs got the start on the bump for Denison. Heidelberg strung together a trio of base hits to score its only run of the day to send the game into the second inning 3-1.
In the second frame, Crittenberger, alongside Jack Lutte, Cade Nowik, and Max Fishbein, drove in three runs to move the lead to 7-1. Following a 1-2-3 showing from Marrs, Lutte chipped in another run in the top of the third to take an 8-1 lead.
To kick off the top of the fourth inning, Crittenberger drew a walk before stealing second. With a 2-1 count, Cade Nowik launched a two run homer over the left field wall to extend the lead to a commanding 10-1. Eron Vega also picked up an RBI to take a double-digit lead.
After 3.0 innings, Evan Cerretani took over on the mound for the Big Red. Cerretani would hurl back-to-back scoreless innings in relief. In the top of the sixth, Kuyper Lashutka scored on a wild pitch to move it to 12-1. In the bottom of the frame, Zack Shook made his second career appearance. The first year kept the Student Princes scoreless in the inning.
The offense put an exclamation mark on the run-rule victory in the final inning. Owen Miller plated the first run before Tristan Kerr would clear the bases with a double to right field. Lutte and Vega tallied their final RBIs of the day to push the lead to 17-1. Noah Shapo closed the game on the mound in the bottom of the seventh. The southpaw struck out two in the three-up, three-down inning.
Marrs earned his third win of the year to move to 3-0 on the season. Out of the bullpen, the trio of Cerretani, Shook, and Shapo tossed 4.0 scoreless frames and allowed zero hits. Together, the staff collected six strikeouts and allowed just one run. The defense recorded zero errors behind the staff.
At the plate, the lineup notched 16 hits. Vega was a perfect 4-4 with two RBIs and a walk. Cade Nowik blasted the lone homer of the day to go along his 2-3 performance. Together, the lineup had six different players record multiple RBIs.
Up Next: The Big Red will wrap up out-of-conference play on Thursday, April 16, at home against the Polar Bears of Ohio Northern. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
